A free memory game you can play by ear

Sound Memory is a classic follow-the-pattern game from Sound Buttons Australia, played with real sound buttons. Each button has its own sound – an airhorn, a boing, a coin and a bonk – so you can remember the pattern by colour, by sound, or both.

It's a quick brain break that runs in any browser with no download, so it works on phones, tablets and school Chromebooks. Beat your best, then try Whack-a-Button or head back to the sound buttons.

Frequently asked questions

How do I play Sound Memory?

Press Play and watch: the game lights up and plays a pattern of sound buttons. Then tap the same buttons in the same order. Each round adds one more sound to the pattern.

Does it get harder?

Yes – the pattern grows by one sound every round, and it speeds up at rounds 5, 9 and 13. Most people can remember 6 to 10 sounds in a row.

Can I play by sound only?

Yes. Every button has its own sound – airhorn, boing, coin and bonk – so you can close your eyes and play by ear. It is great practice for your listening memory.

Is my best score saved?

Your best round is saved in this browser on this device. A private window or clearing your browser data starts it from zero.

Can teachers use this in class?

Yes. Sound Memory is a free, unblocked brain game that works on Chromebooks, tablets and interactive whiteboards – great as a brain break or a class challenge. Whether you can play at school depends on your school's rules.
